College Track: Lincoln wins titles

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Lincoln University women's and men's indoor track and field teams captured titles Saturday in the Illinois College Snow Bird Open.

The Lincoln women dominated the 15-team field, racking up 186 points. Second-place Central Methodist had just 88.5 and William Woods was third with 88.

The Blue Tigers' dominance was evident in the 60-meter dash, where Lincoln had five finishers in the top seven, with Yanique Ellington winning in 7.69 seconds.

Kimberly Bailey was second (7.73), Nickiesha Beaumont was third (8.00), Juneille Barker came in sixth (8.13) and Nadia Harriott finished seventh (8.14).

Lincoln had four finishers in the top six of the 200-meter dash, led by winner Janae Johnson (25.83). Bailey was second 926.02), Adewumi Ademuwagun finished fourth (27.20) and Beaumont came in sixth (27.53).

Lincoln also went 1-2 in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. In the 400, Willomena Williams won (58.20) and Lovan Palmer was second (59.57). In the 800, Jhevere Hall was first (2:17.58) and Monique Thompson was second (2:18.08).

The Blue Tigers took the top three spots in the 60-meter hurdles. Ladonna Richards won (8.57), followed by Harriott (9.01) and Barker (9.30).

Lincoln had the two best teams in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Ellington, Palmer, Hall and Williams won in 4:01.30 and the squad of Richards, Bailey, Thompson and Barker took second in 4:05.03. For good measure, Lincoln's C team of Harriott, Johnson, Beaumont and Ademuwagun came in seventh in the race (4:32.29).

The Blue Tigers won the distance medley relay in 12:49.96 with the team of Hall, Palmer, Thompson and Williams.

Lincoln had four in the top six finishers in the long jump. Ademuwagun won (5.35m), Beaumont was second (5.31), Campbell took third (4.77) and Harriott was sixth (4.61).

Also for Lincoln, Daniele Newman was second in the high jump (1.45 meters) and Jonelle Campbell was third in both the high jump (1.45m) and triple jump (10.96).

For William Woods, Alex Apperson (Eldon High School) was sixth in the 800-meter run (2:37.28). She was also part of the Owls' 4x400-meter relay team that took third (4:23.62). Teammate Grace Young (Russellville High School) was eighth in the 800-meter run (2:38.91). Young was also part of the Owls' distance medley relay team that came in third (13:24.96).

Central Methodist's Emily Nealley (Versailles High School) was second in the 3,000-meter run (11:06.25)

On the men's side, Lincoln scored 85 points to outdistance second-place Lincoln (Ill.) College's 67. William Woods was third with 61.

The best individual performances from the Blue Tigers came from Roger Blake, who won the 200-meter dash (22.71) and was second in the 400-meter dash (50.89), and Stallone Watson, who won the long jump (7.16 meters) and was second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.16).

Two other Blue Tigers placed in a pair of individual events. Orneldo Thomas was second in the long jump (6.87 meters) and fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.15), and Owen Smith won the triple jump (13.86 meters) and was fourth in the long jump (6.26 meters).

Also for Lincoln, Jakiel David was fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.14), Alva Henry was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:04.44), Nicholus Grant was sixth in the 400-meter dash (51.94) and Hampton Mason was eighth in the shot put (13.00 meters).

The Blue Tigers were second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:32.64) with the team of Grant, Blake, Henry and Darran Hunter. The Lincoln B team of Triston Hayes, Jakiel David, Watson and Christian Thompson was sixth in that event (3:44.14).

Competing unattached, Kiefer Smith (Linn High School) won the pole vault by clearing 4.70 meters.

Also at the meet, Westminster's Glen Teubner was fourth in the 3,000-meter run (9:26.01) and Central Methodist's Dilan Simmons (Versailles High School) was fourth in the weight throw (15.20 meters).
