Jays romp to win at Hickman wrestling tourney

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Jays rolled through the competition in talking the title at Hickman Wrestling Invitational that concluded Saturday.

The Jays finished with four individual champions and totaled 368 team points. Northwest: Cedar Hill was a distant second with 273, while Blue Springs South (205) edged Parkway South (203) for third in the 12-team field.

"It was a good tournament for us," Jays coach Phil Cagle said. "The boys all did a good job."

Winning individual titles for Jefferson City were Peter Kuster at 113 pounds (3-0 record), Jacob Brune at 145 (5-0), Logan Moriarity at 160 (6-0) and Jalen Martin at 195 (5-0).

Moriarity won all of his matches by first-period falls, while Martin improved to 33-0 on the season.

Five other Jays took second after advancing to the finals - Dennis Barnes at 126, Tanner Irwin at 138, Zach Hurley at 152, Tekoah Sage at 170 and Logan Coil at 285.

Christian Mayberry at 132 and Ian Coil at 220 both finished fourth. Zach Benges at 120 and Rashaun Woods at 182 were both fifth, while Garrett Nutter was sixth at 106.

"We put in a lot of work last week after a really tough Capital City Tournament and it paid off with some really good finishes," Cagle said.

Jefferson City will wrestle Hickman in a dual Tuesday in Columbia before hosting C.B.C. and Blue Springs on Wednesday at Fleming Fieldhouse.

The Jays junior varsity romped to a title of its own Saturday, taking top honors at the Lebanon JV Tournament.

The Jays totaled 122 team points and had seven individual champions to take the title. Ozark and Waynesville tied for second with 58 points.

Winning titles were Jacob LaBella at 113 pounds, Jacob Tanner at 120, Charlie Kusick at 126, Reece Neighbors at 138, Tyler Bise at 145, Chuck Green at 170 and Mehki Burnley at 220.
