Work begins on new student housing at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Work is underway on a $38.3 million student housing development for Missouri State University in Springfield.

Demolition has begun on the site just north of the university's campus, where four five-story residential buildings are planned. The development will offer students 166 units with 564 beds.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the complex is being planned by Austin, Texas-based developer Aspen Heights.

The development will include parking, an outdoor pool and 6,000-square-foot clubhouse with a fitness room and computer room.

Aspen Heights official Ryan Fetgatter said Wednesday the development is expected to be ready for occupancy for the fall 2016 semester.

Springfield City Council last year designated the property as blighted, allowing for a 25-year partial property tax abatement.
