Dozens of vendors to help raise funds for trampled girl

More than 50 vendors are expected to fill Jefferson City's Capitol Plaza Hotel 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday to support Miracles for Maelyne.

Russellville seven-year-old Maelyne Cartee sustained severe head trauma in September after being trampled by a cow in a field near her home. She continues to respond well to therapy at the St. Louis Children Hospital.

"I have put on the event because it's getting close to time that Maelyne might be coming home and this is when, not only is everyone's life going to readjust, it is going to be very costly," said organizer Michelle Bernskoetter.

In addition to the vendors, such as direct sales, crafts and baked goods, T-shirts with a favorite inspirational quote of Maelyne's will be available. A door prize and entry fee also will help raise funds to support the blonde-haired tomboy and her family.

"People should come out to support the family because they have been through such a traumatic event; their entire life will be changed forever," Bernskoetter said.

A room of children's activities, to allow parents to shop, will include crafts, painting and a magic show.

The Russellville community raised $24,000 for the family at a downtown carnival fundraiser in October, spearheaded by Maelyne's second grade class and the elementary school faculty and staff.

Maelyne is the daughter of Danny Cartee and Michelle Cotton.

Although the young animal-lover still has her spunky personality, she is in pain 24/7.

"But she always is waving and saying "hi' with a big smile," Bernskoetter said. "She, to me, is an angel and is going to change a lot of people's lives for the good."
