AP source: Browns interview Martz

For offensive coordinator spot

CLEVELAND - The Browns are considering the director of the "Greatest Show on Turf" to run their offense.

The team interviewed former St. Louis coach Mike Martz on Monday to be their offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the team's search told the Associated Press. Martz met with Browns officials in Mobile, Ala., at the Senior Bowl, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not commenting as it looks to replace Kyle Shanahan, who resigned after one season.

The 63-year-old Martz has been out of coaching since after the 2011 season, when he was Chicago's offensive coordinator on coach Lovie Smith's staff.

NFL Network first reported Martz's interview with the Browns.

Martz coached the Rams from 2000-05, compiling a 56-36 record, including the postseason. The Rams won the NFC title in 2001 under Martz but lost to New England in the Super Bowl.

In 1999, Martz was the club's offensive coordinator, and with quarterback Kurt Warner and Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk leading the way, the Rams led the NFL in points, yards passing and total yards. They beat Tennessee in the Super Bowl.

Martz has also worked as a coordinator with Detroit, San Francisco and the Bears.

The Browns have been looking for a coordinator since parting ways with Shanahan, whose departure came after the team lost its last five games and finished 7-9. Cleveland's next offensive coordinator will be the club's sixth in six years.

Another of Cleveland's candidates has found work elsewhere as former Bears coach Marc Trestman was hired by Baltimore on Tuesday to be the club's new offensive coordinator. Trestman interviewed with the Browns last week.

The team has also met with Oakland quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, Browns tight end coach Brian Angelichio and former Buffalo coach Chan Gailey, who was hired by the Jets on Tuesday. The Browns will also interview Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn, who previously worked with Cleveland coach Mike Pettine in New York and was with the Browns in 2007.
