Jacob Schulte worked his way through a tough field into the championship match at 152 pounds Saturday at the Capital City Wrestling Invitational.

But when you wrestle the best, the best can take advantage of any little mistake.

"He just put himself in a bad position and when you do that, bad things can happen," Helias coach Jacob Wadley said after Schulte finished second in the tournament at Fleming Fieldhouse in Jefferson City. "But I'm so pleased with Jacob and the way he is wrestling right now."

Schulte squared off against undefeated Canten Marriott of Park Hill for the title. Marriott, who had handed Schulte his only other loss in the tournament, won the match by a first-period fall.

Schulte went 6-0 against the rest of the field, winning once by fall, twice by technical fall, twice by major decision and once by a decision.

"Jacob really showed what kind of wrestler he can be in the past couple of days," Wadley said.

Helias' other best finishers were Zack Carr at 113 and Logan Distler at 160. Both finished seventh in their respective weight classes.

The Crusaders finished 10th in the 12-team field, totaling 43 points.

"This is a really tough tournament," Wadley said. "I think our team is going to continue to grow into it and we will do a lot better in it in the years to come.

"We are looking for good things in the future."

Holt snapped an 11-year run of titles by Park Hill, taking the crown with 285 points. Park Hill was second with 270.5, while Lafayette was third with 254.5.

Helias will return to Fleming Fieldhouse on Wednesday night to take on Jefferson City in their annual crosstown showdown. The junior varsity dual will start at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity around 7 p.m.
