Vogel files for Jefferson City mayoral race

A fourth candidate in the race for Jefferson City mayor filed for the April election on Wednesday morning.

Edith Vogel joins Bob Scrivner, Leonard J. Steinman II and Carrie Tergin on the ballot.

"There are three reasons I'm running," she said. "I qualify, I have experience and I care."

Vogel is a Helias High School graduate. She later attended the Jefferson City School of Practical Nursing and became a licensed practical nurse.

Vogel noted she's "a dedicated community leader" who has been a member of parish councils at both St. Peter and St. Joseph Cathedral churches.

She has been a member in the St. Mary's Auxiliary, Elks, Cole County Historical Society, United Way Distribution panel, Cole County Republican Committee and as a commissioner on Jefferson City's Parks and Recreation Commission.

During her eight years on Jefferson City's Council, from 1999-2007, she served four years as mayor pro tem.

"I see, according to the city charter, the power lies with the city council," she said "I see the mayor as the conductor of council meeting who has the ability to add to the mixture as the council sees fit, but the mayor does not make the final word. Sometimes I feel that isn't happening."

Vogel previously has been a representative on the Cole County Community Committee and the 2000 Census Committee.

She said she is "steeped with a very strong sense of community, a trait she credits to her great-grandfather, who started a business in Jefferson City in 1892."

"I do not have an agenda," Vogel said. "I want things done smoothly. I want to have vigorous debate on issues, don't be wimpy and just pass things to get it done. I think there is a lack of communication. I want citizens to feel they can participate and that the council chamber is open to them in a reasonable way. I want to work with our city staff. We have a good fire and police departments and everyone else at city hall needs to be complemented more for what they do."
