Missouri safeties coach hired as Washington State defensive coordinator

Missouri safeties coach Alex Grinch was named the defensive coordinator at Washington State on Wednesday.

Grinch spent three years at Missouri after coaching the secondaries at Wyoming and New Hampshire. A graduate of Mount Union, Grinch worked as a graduate assistant at Missouri before coaching cornerbacks at New Hampshire. He was promoted to secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at New Hampshire in 2007.

As a safety, Grinch was a part of three Division III national champions at Mount Union, and Grinch was named a third-team All-American his senior year.

"We are excited to have Alex part of our football family," Washington State coach Mike Leach said in a press release. "He is a passionate, tireless worker who brings tremendous excitement and aggression to our team. He has a track record of developing young talent which will be of great benefit to our defense."

Under Grinch, Missouri safety Braylon Webb recorded six interceptions last season and was named second-team All-Southeastern Conference.

Grinch joins fellow former Missouri assistant David Yost, who left the offensive coordinator position with the Tigers in 2013 for the inside receivers coach position with the Cougars.

Grinch is the second Missouri defensive assistant to leave this offseason. Defensive coordinator Dave Steckel left to take the head coaching job at Missouri State.
