Girls basketball: Lady jays 54, Southern Boone 41

CALIFORNIA - The Jefferson City girls basketball team broke open a close game late and captured a 54-41 win Monday against Southern Boone in the first round of the California Tournament.

The second-seeded Lady Jays led the seventh-seeded Lady Eagles 9-6 after one quarter and stretched the advantage to 23-16 at halftime. But Southern Boone closed the gap to 35-30 after three periods, only to see Jefferson City pull away.

The Lady Jays were led by Megan Foster's 19 points, while Nicole Martin added 12.

The Lady Jays (9-7) advance to take on third-seeded Battle at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals. The Spartans advanced with a 44-34 win against sixth-seeded Marshall.
