UNION - The Helias girls basketball team used strong defense in the first, third and fourth quarters to post a 47-42 win against Sullivan on Monday in the Lady Cat Invitational.
The fourth-seeded Lady Crusaders limited the Lady Eagles to single digits in each of those quarters and rallied from a halftime deficit.
Helias led 11-9 after one quarter, but Sullivan used a 20-point period to lead 29-22 at halftime. The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Eagles 15-5 in the third quarter to take a 37-34 edge into the final stanza.
Molly Sandbothe scored a game-high 12 points to pace the Lady Crusaders, while Darcy Baird chipped in with 10.
Helias (8-4) will take on top-seeded Washington at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Blue Jays are ranked ninth in Class 5 in the latest state rankings.
