The Eldon R-1 District is awaiting the new fine arts building as engineers finalize plans for construction.

The approximate $2 million project was approved last April after a $5.6 million bond issue passed, which makes way for several upgrades for the school district.

"The plans seem to be right on track," according to Eldon Superintendant Matt Davis. They had anticipated a start time of February.

While the new construction portion has not yet been sent out for bid, Davis said the engineers and architects are currently finishing up the plans to do so.

With some confusion amidst the area, Davis said the current building is not actually being demolished.

"Construction will hopefully start this spring on new classroom additions on the front of the building," he said. "Once those are finished, renovation of the existing auditorium will begin."

Demolition was used to describe the renovating as most of the building is expected to be gutted, but actual demolition - as in tearing down the building - is not part of the plan.

Davis said the timeline has been set so students will still be able to be in the classrooms while work is being completed.

"That is why we are starting with the classroom additions," he said. "Once they are finished, we can move the students to the new ones so they can start working on the current classrooms."

In addition to the new classrooms, there are plans for new band and choir rooms, along with an improved stage and seating in the auditorium.

"We are switching where the stage and seating are located and increasing the number of seats to be able to seat over 600 people," Davis said. He went on to describe how the classrooms will be added on to the front of the existing building with a brick façade. "Everything will be larger and nicer."
