Man pleads guilty to charges stemming from LU lockdown

A Jefferson City man has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in connection with the lockdown of Lincoln University's campus in November.

Marquel Lewis, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor peace disturbance and was sentenced to 10 days in the Cole County Jail, with credit for 10 days served.

A charge of third-degree assault against Lewis was dismissed.

Court documents show witnesses placed Lewis on the Lincoln campus and in possession of a firearm. He had been suspended from Lincoln at the time.

In a probable cause statement, a Lincoln police officer said Lewis was involved in a physical altercation on campus and threatened to shoot students. The statement said Lewis has been arrested by Lincoln University police several times for driving while intoxicated, distribution of a controlled substance and peace disturbance.

He had told authorities he would come back to the campus if he was able to bond out of custody.

The lockdown occurred a little more than an hour before a planned "Walk For Peace" that was organized as a "call for peace and safety, particularly in the area surrounding the campus," according to an LU press release put out at the time.

That walk was organized "in response to recent crime in the area, including one in which a student was robbed while walking from a nearby gas station," the LU release said.
