LU warns of fraudulent fundraising campaign

Jefferson City police arrested a young man Tuesday afternoon as part of an investigation into a possible scam.

No names or details of the arrest were released, and no charges had been filed as of Tuesday evening.

Before the arrest was announced, Lincoln University officials warned of a scam involving a young man's announcement that he's raising funds for LU and its programs.

In a news release, LU reminded people the school doesn't "rely on door-to-door solicitations" for fundraising.

The release said the school "has been made aware of a young man approaching local businesses and individuals suggesting he is participating in a fundraiser on behalf of the university and KJLU." His pitch said the money will be used "to build a residence for foster children."

Lincoln University's police department also is investigating.

Anyone who has been contacted by the young man should contact the LUPD at 681-5555.

The news release also offered a public reminder that the LU Foundation raises money for the university.

People who are "approached by someone claiming to be raising funds on behalf of the university" and are uncertain about that should contact LU's Office of University Advancement at 681-6070.
