Cole County ambulance calls reach projected level for 2014

The calls for service for the Cole County Ambulance Service in 2014 stayed at the level officials projected.

The final total was 10,100. It was just under 10,000 in 2013.

"Our benchmark is 10,000, so we were just above that," said Ambulance Director Mike Shirts. "For now, we have enough trucks, are able to respond to calls in an appropriate amount of time and have our ambulances based in areas with the greatest demand."

Shirts said if in the next few years the numbers continue to rise then they'll have to look at possibly making changes.

The service has 10 trucks available, with two in reserve.

Ambulances are housed at the main base on Southridge Drive, one downtown at the Cole County Jail, one at the Cole County Fire Protection District Station at County Park, one at the Cole County Fire Protection District Station in Brazito and one at the Regional West Fire Protection District Station in Apache Flats.

"In the city, our response time is under eight minutes. And out in the county, it is less than 15 minutes," Shirts said.

Shirts said they are not seeing any trends, but he did note this year's flu season has been extremely harsh, affecting not only many residents, but also the ambulance staff.

"It came earlier than in the past, and it has been very slow to peak," he said.
