New Bloomfield man charged with assault using bat

NEW BLOOMFIELD, Mo. - An altercation near New Bloomfield resulted in an arrest for assault and armed criminal action for a local resident.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a disturbance involving weapons at 11:35 p.m. Monday in the 1700 block of County Road 372. According to a news release, deputies were told "numerous" people were present, including someone who had been seriously injured after being struck on the head with a baseball bat.

Upon arrival, deputies confirmed one victim, a 62-year-old man from Jefferson City, had received a serious head injury due to a baseball bat strike to the head. The victim was stabilized and taken to a hospital in Jefferson City before being transferred to University Hospital in Columbia where he is in serious but stable condition.

Kurt Catron, 29, of New Bloomfield, was arrested on charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He is being held at the Callaway County Jail on $30,000 cash-only bond.

"Mr. Catron was at the scene at deputy arrival and ... numerous witnesses in the residence also ID'd him as the suspect in question," Lt. Clay Chism said Tuesday.

According to the news release, the investigation is ongoing.
