Missouri wrestling ascends to No. 1 ranking

The Missouri Tigers are No. 1.

After capturing team honors in the National Duals last weekend at Iowa City, Iowa, the Tigers climbed to the top spot in the USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association poll released Tuesday.

Missouri (24-0 in duals this season) received all 12 first-place votes and moved up from last week's No. 2 position. Iowa (17-1), the former No. 1 team that lost 18-12 to Missouri in the finals of the National Duals, dropped to No. 2.

The Tigers are off until March 7-8, when the host the Mid-American Conference championships.

Also on Tuesday, Missouri sophomore J'den Cox was named USA Wrestling's Athlete of the Week, as announced by TheMat.com.

Cox had an outstanding weekend at the 2015 National Duals, as he defeated two top-10 opponents at 197 pounds en route to a perfect 3-0 record.

Last Saturday, the former Hickman Kewpie defeated Illinois' Jeffrey Koepke by major decision and Lehigh's No. 10 Elliot Riddick by decision to help advance the Tigers to the National Duals Finals championship. On Sunday, Cox tallied a 4-3 decision triumph against No. 6 Nathan Burak of Iowa to officially clinch the Tigers' dual victory against the Hawkeyes.

Cox, the defending NCAA champion at 197 pounds, finished the regular season at 30-0. He has won 50 straight matches, best among all Division I wrestlers.
