Police warn of sweepstakes scam

Jefferson City police are warning residents about a scam in which they have been told they have won $5 million dollars.

Police have received several phone calls from residents about the scam.

The citizens are being instructed to send various amounts of money from $100 to $10,000 to make their claim for their winnings. Citizens are reminded not to send money to any types of sweepstakes or lotteries that allege payment is necessary prior to receiving winnings.

Several similar incidents have been recently reported, and this appears to be a new series of scams being attempted. Citizens with further concerns should contact their local Better Business Bureau to check out the validity of the companies/individuals.
