Lincoln women win four track events at Challenge

COLUMBIA - The Lincoln women's indoor track and field team won four events and compiled 128 points to finish second at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge on Friday.

The meet was won by the host school, the University of Missouri, which earned 171 points.

Leading the way for Lincoln was Janae Johnson, who won the 200-meter dash (25.30) and finished second in the 60-meter dash (7.57), the two most successful events of the afternoon for the Blue Tigers.

Lincoln's Kimberly Bailey took second in the 200 (25.84) and seventh in the 60 (7.91), Keja Christie was fourth in the 60 (7.71) and seventh in the 200 (26.30), Yanique Ellington was sixth in the 60 (7.88) and Adewumi Ademuwagun was eighth in the 60 (7.94).

The Blue Tigers also swept the top two spots in the 800-meter run, with Monique Thompson winning in 2:14.72 and Jhevere Hall finishing as the runner-up in 2:14.75.

Hall won the 600-meter run in 1:34.01. Willomena Williams came in second (1:36.61) and Ebony Rose placed fifth (1:40.41).

Lincoln's other victory of the day came in the 60-meter hurdles, where Junielle Barker posted a winning time of 8.71. Nadia Harriott finished second in 8.73.

Williams was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 57.24, while Lovan Palmer finished fourth (57.97).

Ademuwagun came in second in the long jump (5.26 meters), while in the triple jump, Jonelle Campbell was third (11.76 meters) and Daniele Newman was fifth (11.57 meters).

Also at the meet, Missouri S&T's Katlyn Meier (Vienna High School) was fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.19) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (59.03).

The Challenge represented the final regular season meet for Lincoln, which will try to win its fifth straight league title at the upcoming Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet, hosted by the University of Central Missouri, will take place Friday through Sunday.

The Lincoln men's team posted a combined 10 top-10 results between two NCAA Division I meets Friday.

Five Blue Tigers went to the Nebraska Tune-Up, hosted by the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., and recorded five top-10 results.

Lincoln got a third-place finish from Jeromia Riley in the 800-meter run (1:54.09) and another third-place result from the 4x400-meter relay team (3:14.33) of Roger Blake, Winston Edwards, Miguel Barton and Riley.

Also for the Blue Tigers, Barton came in seventh in the 400-meter dash (49.14), while Welsey Best finished seventh in the 60-meter dash (6.92) and 10th in the 200-meter dash (22.30).

Also at the Tune-Up, Nebraska's Landon Bartel (Southern Boone High School) won the high jump by clearing 7-1/2.

The rest of the team went to the Missouri Collegiate Challenge, hosted by the University of Missouri, where Sedeekie Edie highlighted Lincoln's day by finishing as the runner-up in the long jump with a distance of 7.02 meters.

Also for the Blue Tigers, Alva Henry took third in the 600-meter run (1:24.92) and seventh in the 400-meter dash (51.82). Owen Smith placed fourth in the triple jump (14.18 meters) and Edie was fifth (13.68).

Also at the Challenge, Missouri S&T's John Karsten (Blair Oaks High School) came in fifth in the weight throw (16.88 meters) and Westminster's Glen Tuebner (Jefferson City High School) was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (16:34.44).

Missouri won the meet with 160 points and Missouri S&T was second with 125. Lincoln came in sixth with 25 and Westminster was ninth with 15.

The Blue Tigers have completed their regular season and will return to action Friday through Sunday in the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Warrensburg.
