ST. LOUIS, Mo. (AP) - With the New Life Evangelistic Center shelter expected to close this spring, St. Louis officials are seeking to add more than 225 beds of year-round emergency overnight shelter for the homeless.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the effort was announced Wednesday, one day after the city finalized an order mandating that the New Life shelter close by May or agree to limit occupancy to 32 beds. The shelter, operated by the Rev. Larry Rice, routinely houses more than 200 people a night.
St. Louis officials are soliciting proposals from other human service agencies to contract with the city for additional overnight housing.
