Gaines and Schulte return to state for Helias

They return to the state championships as the final qualifiers in their weight classes from their district tournament.

But Helias teammates Nick Gaines and Jacob Schulte did get back to state. And they're looking to do some damage as the Class 3 championships begin today at Mizzou Arena.

"They both got in finishing fourth, but they had to win some big matches to get there," Helias coach Jacob Wadley said.

Gaines (27-10), a sophomore, opens against Tyler Lawson of Webster Groves (sr., 44-2) at 126 pounds. Gaines was a state qualifier at 106 last year, as was Lawson at 126.

"That's a tough match to start the tournament with," Wadley said. "But I think Nick can get into position to place at state, it's not going to be easy, but it is possible."

Schulte (37-8), a senior, will face Trenton Jaco of Fort Zumwalt South (sr., 32-8) in his opening match at 145. Schulte was a qualifier at 138 last year.

"Jacob's got a great shot at the semifinals," Wadley said. "It's not out of the question and placing at state is a real possibility."

Schulte dropped to 145 after wrestling at 152 for most of the season.

"I think he's happy at 145, though he's miserable cutting weight," Wadley said.

In his bubble match at the district tournament, Schulte squared off against Wolfgang Clapper of Grain Valley. Clapper was the runner-up at 113 last year at state, but Schulte pulled out a 3-2 victory.

"That was a great experience for everybody," Wadley said

Helias had six wrestlers advance to the bubble round at districts, double what the Crusaders had last year.

"It was nice to see us get that many, it got us some points," Wadley said. "Everybody did great, everybody wrestled hard."

Action begins at 5 p.m. today.
