Dear Editor:
The Missouri House passed right to work at the right time. We can't afford to keep losing jobs to our neighbors who have already passed similar laws. Twenty-four states in this country allow for worker freedom, and one-quarter of those states share one of Missouri's borders.
Between 2009-13, we lost almost 24,000 jobs in Missouri. Where did they go? Hard to be certain, but we do know that at that same time, Nebraska gained over 40,000 jobs, Oklahoma gained over 62,000 jobs and Tennessee gained more than 110,000 jobs. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa rank in the top ten for the highest take-home pay for working families.
I think it's time we called Right to Work something else. "Right to Earn," "Right to Grow," or "Right to Support My Family Without Having to Move Somewhere Else" all sound like good options to me.
