Crusaders put two in district wrestling semifinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Helias Crusaders will have two wrestlers in today's semifinals in the Class 3 District 4 Tournament after action Friday.

Nick Gaines at 126 pounds and Mason Field at 195 both won their quarterfinal matches after first-round byes for the Crusaders.

Gaines won his match by a first-period fall, while Field was a 6-2 winner in his quarterfinal. They need to win one match today to advance to the Class 3 state tournament that starts Thursday at Mizzou Arena. The top four finishers in each weight class advance to state from the double-elimination district tournament.

Helias is tied with Camdenton for 11th in the team standings with 17 points. Platte County is first with 61.5, with Kearney (52) and Warrensburg (49) rounding out the top three.

Nick Schnieders was 1-1 at 120 for Helias, winning by a first-period fall before losing a 7-1 decision in the quarterfinals. Jacob Schulte at 145 lost by fall in his quarterfinal match.

Also still alive in the wrestlebacks for Helias are Zach Carr at 113, Jacob Frank at 132, Will Farmer at 138, Cole Hazelhorst at 152, Logan Distler at 160, Spencer Ainsworth at 220 and Lane Rose at 285.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. today.
