Special Learning Center celebrates with Moments of Magic

In celebration of the lives touched by the Special Learning Center in its 30-year history, the annual Moments of Magic fundraiser will feature the performances of current and former students.

The center's foundation in the past has brought in national-caliber talent.

"This year the foundation thought we should do something different," Executive Director Debbie Hamler said.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Double Tree Hotel in Jefferson City, a limited number of audience members will see a locally-created production complete with songs and dancing.

A reception with refreshments will precede the spectacle at 5:30 p.m.

Following the show and special thank-yous and recognitions, an anniversary cake will culminate the celebration.

"It should be really, really neat," Hamler said. "It will almost be like a little reunion, too."

Serving hundreds of children each year, Hamler said their is a broad base of talent among their students and former students. Only a small portion will be showcased at the event.

"This is a big undertaking," Hamler said. "We've never done anything like this before."

If the local performances go well, the foundation may consider continuing the format in the future, she said.

"It is very rewarding to be able to see my kids use talents that they have developed to give back to a school and to other kids who also have had challenges," said mother Ginger Luetkemeyer. "Samuel used to go to school there, and now he's able to give back.

Tickets cost $50 and are available at the Special Learning Center by calling 573-634-3070.
