Area track athletes compete at MSSU Open

JOPLIN - Several area athletes recorded top-eight finishes on Saturday at the Missouri Southern Open.

Competing for K.C. Smoke, Brent Vogel (Helias High School) won the men's heptathlon with 5,466 points, winning by 88 points.

Competing unattached, Kiefer Smith (Linn High School) placed seventh in the men's pole vault (15-51/2).

The rest of the competitors took part in women's events. Missouri Southern's Addie Mengwasser (Chamois High School) finished sixth in the 1-mile run (5:18.16). Her teammate, Melanie Bower (Linn High School), tied for seventh in the pole vault (11-81/2). Also for the Lady Lions, Allie Heckemeyer (St. Elizabeth High School) was seventh in the triple jump (36-101/2).

Also, Southwest Baptist's Emily Cumpton (Blair Oaks High School) was sixth in the 5,000-meter run (18:57.91) and Pittsburg State's Kezia Martin (Jefferson City High School) was seventh in the long jump (17-111/2) and part of the Gorillas' 4x400-meter relay team that placed seventh (4:06.54).
