Your Opinion: Consider candidates, not party rhetoric

Dear Editor:

Your article regarding Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich's announcement of his run for governor in 2016 contained an interesting comment paraphrased from Catherine Hanaway's spokesman. Nick Maddux "accused Schweich of putting his personal pursuits ahead of the good of the Republican Party."

We should thank Maddux for shedding this ray of light on what is wrong with politics in the Missouri and the United States. The political parties are running government, not the elected officials.

The Missouri Republican Party allowed Todd Akin to stay in the race against Claire McCaskill for senator. This allowed McCaskill to win, and to cast the deciding vote for the passage of the Affordable Care Act. That is one example of the kind of trouble citizens get into when putting loyalty to party power brokers first.

I'm not sure who I will vote for in the gubernatorial race in 2016, but I hope all voters will consider the beliefs of individual candidates over strict party rhetoric when casting our votes for any office in future elections.
