Bob Scrivner says he wants to improve communication as the next Jefferson City mayor.

A six-way race is set for the Jefferson City mayoral seat, with Scrivner, Leonard Steinman, Carrie Tergin, Edith Vogel, Roy Viessman and Richard S. Groner all hoping to win the April 7 election.

Scrivner, who has served as 3rd Ward councilman since 2008, attended Lincoln University, though he did not graduate. Scrivner has served as president pro-tempore, which means acting in place of the mayor when needed, for the last four years.

Scrivner said he did not set out to be mayor when he first joined the council, but began to think about the position after people approached him about running. He said he wants to be a part of making the community whole, with each organization working with others for the same end goal.

One important issue for Scrivner is communication. He said it's extremely important for officials to let people know what is being done and why, but it can be difficult. Though there are forums for people to be heard, Scrivner said it's often the same few people showing up each time and it's hard to get a grasp of what the community as a whole wants from the local government.

Scrivner said he wants to help the city grow and attract more young professionals to the community.

"As a mayor, you have the ability to bring ideas to the forefront, and people listen more," Scrivner said.

In his spare time, Scrivner said he likes to play golf, though he hasn't been able to play lately due to a recent surgery. He said he enjoys taking part in nearly any type of athletics.
