Lincoln men second, women third at GVSU Quad

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lincoln men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Quad, with the men finishing second and the women finishing third.

The men's team racked up 13 top-five and 21 top-10 results to finish second with 71 points. The host school won the meet with 218 points.

The Blue Tigers were the runners-up in three events, including the triple jump, where Owen Smith placed second at 13.96 meters. Sedeekie Edie also represented Lincoln in that event, taking sixth at 12.21. In the long jump, Orneldo Thomas claimed second with a distance of 6.99 meters. Stallone Watson placed fourth with a mark of 6.76 meters while Smith (6.45) and Edie (6.23) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Hampton Mayson placed third in the shot put with a distance of 13.75 meters. Darran Hunter finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.96 meters.

The Blue Tigers' other second-place result came in the 400-meter race, where Roger Blake was the runner-up at 48.88 seconds. Winston Edwards came in sixth, clocking in at 50.65, while Nicholus Grant claimed eighth at 50.79. Jeromia Riley took third in the 800-meter run at 1:54.70. Alva Henry also competed in that event, finishing sixth with a time of 2:02.65.

In the 60-meter dash, Thomas posted a fourth-place result with a time of 7.12. Jakiel David finished fifth with a mark of 7.20. In the 200-meter race, Blake took fourth at 22.24. Watson placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.24.

Two Lincoln teams finished in the top five of the 4x400-meter relay. The foursome of Edwards, Riley, Blake and Grant came in third after finishing in 3:21.32, and the team of Watson, Hunter, Henry and Triston Hayes finished fifth after timing in at 3:31.72.

The Lincoln women won three events and had 16 top-five results.

Jhevere Hall won the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:10.84 to beat teammate Monique Thompson, who was the event's runner-up at 2:13.45. Ladonna Richards won the 60-meter hurdles after clocking in at 8.69. Juneille Barker also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing fifth in 9.02.

Lincoln's other victory of the evening came in the 4x400-meter relay, where the team of Hall, Thompson, Lovan Palmer and Willomena Williams won with a time of 3:45.57. The Blue Tigers' second foursome, consisting of Barker, Kimberly Bailey, Ebony Rose and Nadia Harriott, rounded out the event's top three with a time of 3:56.99.

In sprints, Janae Johnson finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.90, and Williams placed second in the 400 at a 56.35 mark. In the 200-meter dash, Bailey placed fifth at 25.91 while Adewume Ademuwagun claimed seventh at 36.51. Meanwhile, in the 400-meter race, Palmer finished third in 57.52 and Rose took sixth in 1:00.51.

In the 60-meter run, Yanique Ellington led four Blue Tigers in the top 10 by taking fourth in 7.73. Johnson finished close behind at 7.76, good for fifth, while Bailey placed sixth in 7.84, and Ademuwagun took seventh in 7.96.

In the field events, Daniele Newman was the runner-up in the triple jump with a 11.04 meter jump, and Ademuwagun took second in the long jump at 5.48 meters. Newman came in fifth in the long jump, posting a mark of 4.88 meters, while Jonelle Campbell took seventh with a 4.63-meter jump. Campbell, who also took eighth in the high jump at 1.45 meters, placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.62 meters.

Lincoln will be back in action Friday when the Blue Tigers compete in the Tiger Invitational in Columbia. The Blue Tigers will also send athletes to the Meyo Invitational, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Notre Dame.
