Our Opinion: Be a sensible, sober driver for the new year

Interested in a resolution that will serve you well on New Year's Eve and throughout the coming year?

Resolve to be a sensible, sober driver.

The somber statistics from the New Year's holiday counting period last year included 1,379 traffic crashes that caused 504 injuries and 11 fatalities, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

During this year's counting period from 6 p.m. Thursday through midnight Sunday, we owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to do better.

The New Year's holiday presents a number of pitfalls that must be avoided.

First, don't drink and drive, which does not mean don't drink. Holiday parties often involve alcoholic beverages but, if you plan to drink, arrange in advance for a sober driver or call a taxi.

Driving while impaired and puts yourself, your passengers and other motorists in jeopardy.

Second, be aware of the weather forecast. The patrol reminds drivers to allow extra travel time and be flexible when inclement weather is expected. Clear ice and snow from your vehicle, particularly all windows, and obey the law that requires you headlights to be on if you're using the windshield wipers.

In addition, practice courtesy and patience on the roadways. The patrol advises drivers to pay attention, use turn signals to communicate intentions and, when in doubt, yield the right-of-way.

Finally, buckle up. According to the patrol, approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are not at the time of the traffic crash. Be sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

Avoid becoming a statistic during the New Year's holiday counting period. Be a sensible, sober driver.
