Alton defeats Eureka in Holiday Hoops Invitational

LaJarvia Brown is one of the top prep triple jumpers in the country.

It turns out the Alton, Ill., senior can play some pretty good basketball as well.

Brown, a 5-3 guard, scored 31 points Tuesday afternoon to lead the Lady Redbirds to a 64-48 win against the Eureka Lady Wildcats in a loser's bracket semifinal game of the State Farm Holiday Hoops Invitational at Rackers Fieldhouse.

Brown, who has signed for track and field with Texas A&M and represented the United States in an international competition last summer in Colombia, finished 12-of-18 from the field and 3-of-4 at the line in the win.

After Eureka hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, Alton answered with nine straight points and never trailed again. The Lady Redbirds led 16-12 after one quarter and extended their advantage to 31-19 at the break.

Eureka cut the deficit to 40-31 after three quarters before Brown scored 16 of her points in the final period. The 16-point final margin matched the biggest of the game.

Jewel Wagner had a double-double for Alton, totaling 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Madi Taggart and Jordan Brown had 11 points each for Eureka, while Grace Archambault finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Alton will face Lebanon in the fifth-place game at 4 p.m. today. Eureka and Blue Springs South will meet for seventh-place at 2:30 p.m.
