IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Mike Gesell scored a career-high 25 points and Iowa cruised past top-ranked Michigan State 83-70 on Tuesday night, handing the Spartans their first loss of the season.

Peter Jok had 19 points for the Hawkeyes (10-3), which toppled a No. 1 team for the first time in 16 years.

Iowa never trailed in what turned out to be a surprisingly easy win over the Spartans (13-1). The Hawkeyes led by as many as 19 points in snapping a nine-game losing streak against Michigan State.

Eron Harris scored 21 points to lead the Spartans, who were playing their second game without Denzel Valentine - their leader in scoring, rebounds and assists - and their first since coach Tom Izzo's father Carl died Monday.

The Spartans trailed by double digits at halftime for the second straight game. Iowa led 37-23 following Michigan State's lowest-scoring first half of the season.

Iowa cruised to its first win over a No. 1 team since beating Connecticut in former coach Steve Alford's debut in 1999.

Matt Costello had 17 points for Michigan State.

No. 2 KANSAS 78, UC IRVINE 53

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Perry Ellis had 14 points and Frank Mason III added 13 as Kansas pulled away in the second half.

The Jayhawks (11-1) sleepwalked through much of the game, and trailed 26-22 late in the first half. But a 22-2 spurt spanning halftime allowed them to seize control, and a couple of big baskets by Ellis and Landen Lucas down the stretch put Irvine (10-5) away.

Brannen Greene finished with 10 points, and Devonte Graham had nine for the Jayhawks, who have won 10 straight since blowing a second-half lead in their lone loss to No. 1 Michigan State.

Seven-foot-6 Mamadou Ndiaye had 12 points for the Anteaters and 7-2 Ioannis Dimakopoulos added 10.

No. 13 MIAMI 76, PRINCETON 64

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Angel Rodriguez scored 14 points and Miami withstood an upset bid.

Davon Reed finished with 13 points and Ja'Quan Newton scored all of his 13 in the second half for the Hurricanes (11-1).

Rodriguez's two free throws and 3-pointer during a 1-minute stretch late in the second half put the Hurricanes ahead for good. Rodriguez's conversion from behind the arc with 5:02 left gave Miami a 62-58 lead.

Amir Bell scored 17 points and Devin Cannady added 13 points for the Tigers (7-4).

No. 14 PURDUE 61, WISCONSIN 55

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A.J. Hammons scored 24 points and Dakota Mathias hit two 3s in the final 1:19 for Purdue.

The Boilermakers (13-1, 1-0 Big Ten) snapped a four-game losing streak to the Badgers (8-6, 0-1), who lost their first conference game under interim coach Greg Gard.

But Purdue needed the two late 3s by Mathias after Wisconsin had narrowed an 11-point deficit to 52-49 with 1:40 left on a short jumper by Alex Illikainen.

Hammons was 9 of 14 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. Mathias finished with six points.

Nigel Hayes led Wisconsin with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting. But the Badgers shot just 39 percent from the field.
