California football gets shut out

MEXICO - California's offense was shut out for the second consecutive week Friday, falling to Mexico 35-0.

On Mexico's first drive, the Pintos held the Bulldogs' option-style offense to a three-and-out, but after that, it was all Mexico.

On its second drive, Mexico punched it in on its seventh play from scrimmage from the 6-yard line. The drive totaled 63 yards and plays of 12, 9 and 10 yards three separate times were the highlights.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored on first-and-goal from the 3-yard line, then they scored on their next drive after Deion Wayman intercepted a pass intended for Landon Mouse. Wayman returned the interception 56 yards to set up a first-and-10 from California's 21-yard line.

A Karsten Ekern 3-yard score gave Mexico a 22-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with a five-play, 53-yard touchdown drive. Spencer Thomas, the starting quarterback, dropped back for a pass on third-and-seven, but scrambled for an 11-yard gain and the first down. Then, Ekern gain 29 yards on the next play to set up a D'Milo Nunnelly 10-yard score.

Mexico padded its lead as time expired in the third quarter. Michael White's 6-yard rush to the left pylon gave the Bulldogs the 35-0 advantage.
