The Jefferson City Jays put on a show in the season opener, scoring 64 points in a win at McCluer North last week.

But tonight, the Jays will be dealt with the task of facing the dominant force that is Christian Brothers College High School.

The Jays will have their hands full with the defending Missouri Class 6 state champs. Recent C.B.C. opponents haven't fared well against the star-studded group. The Cadets have won 16 straight games, dating back t0 its district final loss to Hazelwood Central in 2013.

Last season, the Cadets went a perfect 15-0 and averaged scoring a hefty 50 points a game, while giving up a mere 9 per contest.

No. 1 C.B.C. put up impressive numbers in a 66-7 Week 1 win against Hickman at Faurot Field.

Jays head coach Ted LePage recovered some footage of last season's 47-0 home loss to the St. Louis powerhouse. LePage recognizes the Cadets success in taking advantage of opponents mistakes, and not making mistakes themselves. The Jays will look to limit those tonight.

"Fundamental defense, it's as simple as that," he said. "(C.B.C.) is never out of position, so you're always going to know where they'll be. ... If we make them move the football, we'll have a chance. We're trying to make them take as many snaps as they can, trying not to avoid the big play.

"What hurts teams against C.B.C. is giving up the big play. So we want to try and tackle them, we want to try and keep them in sustained drives where they can't score (quickly). They will capitalize on your mistakes. They are a team that will make you make a mistake, and then punish you."

The Jays defense will be tasked with trying to slow quarterback Blake Charlton, running back Tre Bryant and Lamar Anderson, a running back and wide receiver.

Jays senior safety Izaya Sands, a three-year starter that sat out last week with an injury, returns to the lineup in Week 2.

"Having him out there will help because he can take away some things they do well," LePage said. "He's the motor behind our defense."

LePage said his team has prepared this week with a positive outlook.

"We've come a long way since this game last year. It looked like utter chaos and some other bad things were going on," he said. "We've built on that throughout last season and it's carried on into this one."

The top Class 6 matchup should garner attention across the state, with the Jays as the latest team looking to put a halt to the Cadets impressive run.

"You expect to go out and play well and win," LePage said. "The opportunities that they give you are very few. So that's what we've really tried to say. Do what you do. And again, if we don't make the mistakes then we're not giving them opportunities for big plays.

"We know what to expect. They're going to be talented, they're going to be in position and they're going to play hard. But I think the Jays will, too."

The No. 5 Jays will hit the road to St. Louis for the second straight week for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
