Suspect charged in identity theft case

A Jefferson City man charged with eight counts of identity theft this week was caught Tuesday morning after a vehicle pursuit.

Travis Sumpter, 22, 4215 Wellington Green, is now charged with resisting arrest as well. He was also facing a charge of fraudulent use of a credit card in the identity theft case.

Court records show Jefferson City police detectives responded to the 4000 block of Catalina Drive just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in an attempt to locate Sumpter.

While in the area, Sumpter was spotted driving a vehicle, and detectives tried to stop him.

Sumpter failed to stop, which led to a pursuit for several miles.

He continued until he pulled into a private business in the 5800 block of West Business 50, where he was taken into custody.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Sumpter began working June 15 at Jefferson City Country Club. Between June 16 and June 22, fraudulent credit card accounts were created, using names of either members or employees of the country club.

Sumpter had access to all the members and employees personal information as a part of his duties while working at the country club.

A records check through Capitol One verified the eight names used to fraudulently open an account.

In a document provided by Capitol One, Sumpter set up an account with a fake name, but used the date of birth and Social Security number of a club member.

Sumpter has a pending fraud case in Ladue, in which he has not made a court appearance.
