Cole County Commission votes to roll back levy

The Cole County Commission voted to roll back the county's general fund levy for 2016 and keep the road and bridge levy at its current level.

At Tuesday's meeting, commissioners set the general fund levy at 7.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. A county resident who owns a $100,000 home would see a $25 reduction in property taxes, Cole County Collector Larry Vincent said.

Last year, the commission rolled back the levy to 10 cents for each $100 of assessed property value.

Since 2009, commissioners have been reducing the rate because they promised a 60 percent rollback in tax collections in 2008 when voters approved a sales tax to pay for ambulance service operations.

The levy was at 33 cents in 2008.

Meanwhile, the commission decided to keep the public works/road and bridge levy at an even 27 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

They had been looking at raising the levy to 27.06 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

A 27.06 levy could have gained the county around $54,000 if all taxes are collected.

This levy hasn't been raised since 2001.

Commissioners voted on both levies at one time. The final vote was 2-1, with Presiding Commissioner Sam Bushman and Eastern District Commissioner Jeff Hoelscher voting to lower the general fund levy and keep the road and bridge levy at the current level.

Western District Commissioner Kris Scheperle voted against it, saying increasing the road and bridge levy would allow the county to keep up with increasing costs to repair and maintain county roads.
