Your Opinion: Responses to recent letters

Dear Editor:

The Virginia Military Institute sent many to the Southern Civil War cause. By the spring of 1863, three of General "Stonewall" Jackson's division commanders were from VMI, along with over twenty of his brigadier generals and colonels. Shortly before his flank attack at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Jackson stated, "The Institute will be heard from today."

I thought of this moment in history reading the Aug. 15 Op-Eds; the Tinfoil Hat Brigade was heard from today. Mr. Bode, so, more abortions are performed on blacks than whites, the "Black Lives Matter" crowd should protest Planned Parenthood? The fact that many of these women have to surmount incredible barriers such as waiting periods, forced and invasive sonograms, and other political nonsense in order to obtain an abortion makes the root problem the existence of Planned Parenthood?

Mr. Sampson, what were you expecting to demonstrate from that word salad? Because you and possibly your church believe that the Bible prohibits same-sex marriage does not mean in fact that it does. Other Christians indeed view things differently. Consider the Presbyterians and Episcopalians; both recently voted in their national to allow same-sex marriage. I have to assume they debated and discussed the theological implications of this decision prior to their voting. I put my money on their bishops understanding Christian theology just a bit better than you do.

Mr. Johnson, two comments: I suggest that you do some research on the concepts of "Godwin's Law," espoused by Internet denizens. (I prefer "Godwin's Postulate," however since it is now in the Oxford Dictionary as Godwin's Law, I suppose I will have to accede to the law notion).

Second, Common Core is a ruse to "control our thought and revise history?" Wow. What CC is (and what it is not). Simply put, Common Core is the idea there should be of minimum standards that schools should be teaching. It was developed by teachers and educational specialists.

It is not a "federal takeover" of education, and was not legislated, or forced on anyone. The idea is good, and given the way people move nowadays, I believe the need is self-evident. A company in Missouri should be able to trust the basic education that a potential worker received in Mississippi. The problem is that Common Core has been poisoned by rhetoric on both the "right" and the "left." That is truly sad.
