Late buses draw some complaints

Bob Weber oversees the Jefferson City School District's facilities operations.

And the district's bus contract with First Student.

On the first and maybe second day of school, that bus supervision thing may be the bigger headache.

"We were running a little late on some of the buses," he said Thursday evening, "with new kids, new stops and - sometimes - a new driver who has to get acclimated to the routes.

"This morning was pretty good, but this afternoon was a little slow."

Some parents took to social media to complain about buses dropping students off an hour or more later than scheduled.

Some complained calling First Student was useless, because the bus company's line kept ringing busy.

Weber said he understands the frustration, but asked parents to be patient. "Work with us. It will be better (today) and better every day as we progress and get the bugs worked out," he said.

At some schools - including the Jefferson City High School complex - different loading zones were implemented this year which may have delayed buses from leaving as scheduled.

Weber also noted First Student can't plan its routes until after the district has student registration which was just two weeks before the start of classes this year.

"It's really a narrow window to get all that done - and then First Student sends out a postcard" identifying the approximate pick-up and drop-off times for each child's bus stop, Weber said. "And I think there were a few mistakes on some of the postcards.

"We've just got to get the hiccups and the bugs out of it - and the first and second days are the toughest."

Weber said people should call First Student with their problems but, if those issues don't get resolved, they should call his office at 659-3017.
