Missouri candidates for governor gather at State Fair

SEDALIA, Mo. (AP) -- Almost all the potential candidates for governor have gathered to shake hands with voters at the Missouri State Fair.

The gubernatorial hopefuls were under the same tent Thursday for the annual Governor's Ham Breakfast.

Republican candidates generally said they opposed proposals to raise the gas or cigarette taxes to pay for roads and bridges.

Of the six expected candidates, only state Sen. Bob Dixon, of Springfield, has voiced support to raise the gas tax. He voted for a failed Senate measure this year to increase the diesel fuel tax by 3.5 cents and the gas tax by 1.5 cents.

Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster, who has said he plans to run for governor, says he supports increasing the cigarette tax, but supports using the money for higher education.
