Your Opinion: Better uses for proceeds from sheriff's barbecue

Dear Editor:

This is in reference to money from the Cole County Sheriff's Barbecue being used to used to fund slogans for over 30 sheriff's department squad cars. Seriously?

A lot of people work very hard at this barbecue to raise funds to supply actually needed equipment for the department. As far as I'm concerned mottos of any kind, secular, religious or otherwise, have no place on squad cars. And they certainly do not fit the definition of safety equipment or training.

A recent lawsuit by inmates of the Cole County jail stated the problems of having been issued only one pair of socks, underwear and other clothing. Obviously, laundry day presents some rather "unique" issues.

Since there is apparently an abundance of funds, (not needed for equipment or training, etc.) I think it would far more "Christian" to use this apparent excess money to provide inmates with a second pair of socks and underwear at the very least. Shouldn't Christianity be more than just an emblazoned slogan, requiring nothing more of us?

I have no objection or problem with the proposed motto itself. I support any deputies wishing to use proposed slogan to be allowed to do so, with their own money. The current proposal is an over-reach at best.
