'In God We Trust' to be added to sheriff's patrol cars

It was done in Greene County, then Stone County, and now all sheriff's departments in the state of Missouri look to be doing it.

The Missouri Sheriff's Association unanimously voted this week to have the phrase "In God We Trust" placed on their patrol vehicles.

"It got national attention when the sheriff's in southern Missouri did this and the issue was brought up to us here at our conference at the lake so we took the vote to support the concept," Cole County Sheriff Greg White said.

White said a resident had talked to him prior to this week's vote and now is planning to use funds raised at the annual sheriff's barbecue to pay for the work.

"It's no different than having the flag on our vehicles," he said. "It's our national motto. It's on our money. It's been challenged and the Supreme Court has said since it is the national motto, it can't be removed."

White said county commissioners are backing the idea and approximately 30 vehicles will have the logo put on them.

"Congress could certainly change the law, but I think the courts would go back to the 1956 ruling and keep it on there," he said.
