College Softball: William Woods wins one, loses one

COLUMBIA, Mo. - William Woods began its defense of the American Midwest Conference championship Wednesday with a 7-0 win against fourth-seeded Freed-Hardeman and a 3-2 loss to top-seed Lindenwood-Belleville.

In the opener, the Owls got more than enough in the first inning when they scored four runs but tacked on a run in the second, fourth and sixth innings each for good measure.

Shelby LeCuru (Helias) knocked three hits for William Woods, driving in two and scoring a run. Brailee Schulte (Jefferson City High School) had two hits, two RBI and a run. Beth Begemann (Southern Boone) also had two hits, driving in one. Hannah Campell (Russellville) notched one hit, one RBI and two runs scored.

Against Lindenwood-Belleville, Campbell had one of the Owls' seven hits and scored a run. William Woods scored in the first inning, as did Lindenwood-Belleville, but couldn't match the Lynx' two runs in the third, scoring just one the remainder of the game.

William Woods (28-23), the tournament's No. 5 seed, face second-seeded Park University at 9 a.m. today.
