Fort Hays sweeps Lincoln baseball

Fort Hays State ruined Senior Day for the Lincoln baseball team Sunday, sweeping both halves of a doubleheader with the Blue Tigers at Lincoln Field.

The Tigers emerged with a 10-3 lead in the opener, scoring in all but two innings, then rolled to a 15-5 win in the nightcap that was keyed by an eight-run fifth inning.

Prior to the twinbill, Lincoln honored its only two seniors, catcher Christian Bunch and pitcher Dalton Goings.

In the lidlifter, Fort Hays jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.

Both teams got a run in the third, with Lincoln's coming when Kaleb Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After the Tigers got four in the top of the fifth to make it 8-1, the Blue Tigers got one in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Schnieders.

Each team scored once in the sixth, with the Blue Tigers getting theirs on an RBI single by Jameson Mahan.

Fort Hays got the game's final run in the seventh.

Mahan had half of Lincoln's six hits by going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Davis ended up with one hit and one RBI.

Goings (0-5) took the loss while throwing a complete game. He scattered 13 hits and gave up nine earned runs while walking four and striking out five.

Fort Hays also scored in five of the seven innings in the nightcap, getting one in the first, two in the second and fourth, eight in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Lincoln got four of its five runs in the third inning thanks to a solo home run by Dillon Walker and a three-run homer by Daniel Castillo.

The Blue Tigers got their final run in the fifth on an RBI single by Davis, who ended up 4-for-4 with one RBI to amass two-thirds of Lincoln's six hits.

Schnieders (1-8) started and took the loss for the Blue Tigers. He gave up nine runs (eight earned) in 41/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and three walks while striking out six.

Gus Goodnight followed and did not get an out while allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit and one hit batter. Ryan Simpson followed with two innings of work, giving up three unearned runs on four hits and two walks. Cameron Massman did not allow a hit and walked one while getting the final two outs.

Lincoln committed four errors in the contest.

Fort Hays State (17-28 overall, 14-20 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) and Lincoln (3-43, 1-29) will play another doubleheader starting at noon today. It will be the final two games of the conference season for both teams.

The Blue Tigers will then wrap up the season with a doubleheader Wednesday at Missouri-St. Louis.
