Man charged in fatal shooting on Job Corps campus

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A 20-year-old man was charged Thursday in the shooting death of a fellow recent arrival to a federal job training program in St. Louis.

Matthew Carlock of University City is jailed on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Matthew Anderson, according to online court records, which didn't list an attorney for Carlock. His bond was set at $1 million.

Police said Anderson, 21, of unincorporated north St. Louis County, was shot once in the chest on his bed Wednesday night at the Job Corps campus. Police Lt. John Green said Anderson arrived at the center on Tuesday. The suspect, who arrived about a week earlier, fled after the shooting but later surrendered, police said.

Job Corps is a career training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor for people ages 16 to 24, according to its website. Green said there are between 300 and 400 students on campus, with 108 dorm rooms.

After the shooting, police searched the campus and allowed students to leave in small groups as anxious parents waited.

Rose Blassingame, of Vinita Park, was waiting for her 16-year-old daughter outside of the complex's gates at about 10 p.m. Wednesday. She said she was told that police were searching the dorms in the complex individually before letting residents out.

Blassingame, 36, said she had been waiting for her daughter for more than three hours. "She's really upset," she said of her daughter. "She called me crying."
