Your Opinion: Go slow in U.S. 50 work zone

Dear Editor:

As the weather heats up outside, so does the annual road construction season. This could not be more evident in our area than the significant project underway to construct a new interchange on U.S. 50 at Lafayette. This project has been in the early stages since February but now appears to be in full swing. With this comes lane closures, slowed traffic and delays. This project is expected to take over another year to complete.

I work in the area of the project and travel through the area multiple times each day. In the short time the project has been underway I have seen many examples of drivers simply ignoring the posted speed limits and making bad decisions all, I assume, in the name of getting somewhere a little quicker.

Today, I watched as officers from both the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Cole County sheriff's office sped through the work zone, seemingly paying little attention to the workers merely feet away from their speeding vehicles.

I write this to simply ask all of us to plan ahead and expect to spend a little more time getting through this area over the duration of this project. Be considerate of other drivers but, as importantly, be considerate of the workers in this work zone who risk their lives daily to work in such dangerous conditions. Slow down. Be cautious. Be attentive. Put the phones down and keep the eyes up. The whole construction zone is less than a mile long, probably less than a half mile.

Hurrying through it instead of slowing down won't save you that much time anyway. Slowing down may save a life. Isn't that worth a few extra minutes?
