Jefferson City restaurant inspections for March 2015

Jefferson City's Food Code requires food-service establishments be inspected at least once every six months.

The inspections note critical and non-critical violations.

Critical violations are the more serious, as they are more likely to compromise food safety and cause health problems. Critical violations often concern improper food temperatures, either on a stove/grill or in holding areas after cooking or before cooking, such as in a refrigerator. They also could involve plumbing repairs, personal hygiene, people who are sick handling food or contamination, such as pest infestations.

Non-critical violations are more minor offenses, which could deal with cleaning/maintenance of floors, walls, ceilings, open waste receptacles, unshielded light bulbs in a food preparation area or a missing thermometer in a refrigerator.

The Food Code typically requires establishments to correct critical violations at the time of inspection when possible, or within a longer time frame not to exceed 10 days agreed upon with the regulatory authority. Establishments are required to correct non-critical violations by a date agreed to with the regulatory authority not to exceed 90 days from the time of inspection.

The March 2015 inspections noted:

Jefferson City High School, 609 Union St., no violations.

Lawson Elementary School, 1105 Fairgrounds Road, no violations.

Moreau Heights Elementary School, 1410 Hough Park St., no violations.

Simonsen Junior High School, 501 E. Miller St., no violations.

South Elementary School, 707 Linden Drive, one critical violation: mechanical dishwashing machine is not reaching 160 degrees. (Kitchen staff is in contact with a plumber and will use three-step process for dishwashing while machine is down and serve the children on disposable dishes.)

Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 1201 Fairgrounds Road, one non-critical violation: mold-like substance on wall above three-compartment sink and on floor of walk-in cooler under shelves.

Helias High School, 1305 Swifts Highway, no violations.

Saint Joseph Elementary School, 2303 W. Main St., no violations.

Saint Peter Elementary School, 314 W. High St., no violations.

Trinity Lutheran Elementary School, 803 Swifts Highway, one non-critical violation: door seals on True two-door cooler cracked and broken.

Break Time No. 3048, 627 Clark Ave., eight non-critical violations: single-serve lids stored near motor oil; microwave had food debris and splatter present; cappuccino machine had food debris present; F'Real milkshake machine had food debris present; no paper towels at front hand sink; hand sink in back room being used to store damaged products, so employees are unable to use it for hand-washing; need to elevate items in back room near mop sink - and one critical violation: plumbing leak under triple sink. Followup inspection - three non-critical violations: cappuccino machine had debris present; F'Real milkshake machine had food debris present; soda fountain had debris and splatter present.

Break Time No. 3050, 1907 E. McCarty St., six non-critical violations: floor in back dish room by triple sink has spilled food liquids present; North Star coffin freezer failed, product was discarded, and is awaiting repairs; old rodent droppings in bottom storage cabinets with sugar, lemonade, teas and straws; area around public restrooms has numerous holds, fallen wall tile and sagging ceiling tile; cabinets under drink line have deteriorated particle board shelving; front hand sink for employees does not provide hot water.

Towne Grill, 315 Jefferson St., one non-critical violation: door seal on two-door cooler in back has torn and broken seals.

Das Stein Haus, 1436 Southridge Drive, no violations.

El Jimador, 2930 W. Edgewood Drive, three non-critical violations: coats and personal clothing found atop food containers in store room; peeling paint present on wall trim above dish station; torn door gasket hanging from meat prep table cooler and grill stand has badly bent support leg.

El Jimador Inc., 1410 Missouri Blvd., one non-critical violation; interior ceiling of outside storage shed starting to show mold and discoloration.

Firehouse Subs, 2103 Missouri Blvd. Suite D, one non-critical violation: walk-in freezer light burned out.

Hy-Vee Food Store - Grocery, 3721 W. Truman Blvd., three non-critical violations: food debris on shelves; food debris in drain in frozen section; debris on shelves of open display case.

Jamey's Private Club, 900 W. McCarty St., two non-critical violations: holes present in walls; drain in closet not draining property and mold present around mop sink.

JC Mart, 105 W. Dunklin St., five non-critical violations: tracks and inside of Blue Bunny Freezer have debris present; walk-in cooler shelves have debris present; food items stored on the floor; no covered trash can in restroom; seal on walk-in cooler in disrepair.

Jefferson City Dairy Queen Grill N Chill, 2114 Missouri Blvd., one non-critical violation; several trash bags have spilled and broken open behind dumpster.

Maru's Restaurant, 242 Jaycee Drive, five non-critical violations: food and debris present on floor in dry storage area; no trash can at back hand sink; dust accumulation on fan covers in walk-in cooler; bar refrigerator had debris present; utensils for customer use displayed improperly (should invert utensils with handles up).

Mi Degollado Mexican Restaurant, 512 Ellis Blvd. Suite R, 10 non-critical violations: FRP wall panel loose on corner in dish station; shredded chicken and ground beef not reheated to 165 degrees before placing in steam table for hot holding; both door gaskets torn and hanging from meat prep table cooler; screen door to outside back badly torn; interior and exterior of veggie and meat prep table coolers soiled with food residues and microwave interior soiled with food spills; corner of grill leaking grease on supporting table and onto floor; employee coats, sweaters and other personal items found above steam table line and in single-service containers (corrected on site); kitchen hand-wash sink soiled and stained; men's restroom hand sink hot water faucet handle missing; bulk bins of food (beans, rice, flour, etc.) in store room open with no lids.

Mi Tolteca Mexican Restaurant, 1850 Route C Suite E, seven non-critical violations: walls by meat prep table cooler and dish station area have deteriorating drywall and loose FRP panels; at least two lights no lit in kitchen over prep areas; servers' hand sink has hot water but cold water faucet is stripped; vegetable prep table running above 45 degrees; bottle beer cooler running above 45 degrees; dumpster area has spilled trash present and outside of building in back has litter and broken equipment present; kitchen air vent above dish station has grease and oil dripping from cover; bar hand-wash sink blocked by equipment, lids, etc.; servers' hand sink blocked with pitchers. Followup inspection - three non-critical violations: vegetable prep table running at 45 degrees; kitchen air vent above dish station has grease and oil dripping from cover; walls by meat prep table cooler and dish station have deteriorating drywall and loose FRP panels.

Subway Capital Mall No. 15307, 3600 Country Club Drive, Suite 216, two critical violations: items on sandwich make table not held at 41 degrees or less; chemical spray bottles stored over prep table - and two non-critical violations: no paper towels at back hand sink; floors in walk-in freezer had food debris present. Followup inspection - one non-critical violation: food on floor in walk-in freezer.

Subway Store No. 28982, 905 Eastland Drive, Suite A, two non-critical violations: soda fountain had soda debris and splatter present; soda debris under fountain near drain.

The Grand Cafe LLC, 107 E. High St., one critical violation: cheese, lettuce and peppers not maintaining temperatures below 41 degrees - and two non-critical violations: no hand-wash sign at back hand sink; no hand-wash sign in men's restroom. Followup inspection - no violations.

The Old Brick House Deli, 2421 W. Edgewood Drive, Suite H, one non-critical violation: food residue present on wall by dishwasher/stove/slicer area.

Walgreens No. 09713, 3740 W. Truman Blvd., one non-critical violation: walk-in cooler fan covers had dust accumulation.

West Gate Lanes (Capital Bowl), 2017 Christy Drive, two non-critical violations: floor tiles missing, coming loose or peeling away in back prep room, dishwashing area and old grill/hood area; holes in drywall in back prep room/utensil-washing area/mop sink.

Yo Yums, 122 E. High St., one non-critical violation: dust/wall debris present under dishwashing sinks.

Save-A-Lot Grocery Store - Produce, 1228 E. McCarty St., one non-critical violation: produce hand sink has leak in drain line.

Pretzel Maker, 3600 Country Club Drive, Suite 120, one non-critical violation: soda machine had soda debris present.

Walmart Supercenter No. 29 - Produce, 724 W. Stadium Blvd., two non-critical violations: debris between glass and display on strawberry display case; no paper towels at hand sink in produce room.

Walmart Supercenter No. 29 - Bakery, 724 W. Stadium Blvd., three non-critical violations: dust on vent fans in open display case; dust on fans in walk-in cooler; donut icing machine had accumulation of icing debris.

Senior Center at the Mall, 3600 Country Club Drive, one non-critical violation: roaster pan lid in hand sink (must leave hand sink open at all times for use).

Clarke Senior Center, 1310 Linden Drive, one non-critical violation: McCall freezer No. 6 running 30-32 degrees instead of 0 degrees (contents not frozen solid).

Salvation Army Center, 900 Jefferson St., six non-critical violations: hand sink does not have adequate pressure for hand washing; disposable paper towels not present at hand sink for proper hand drying; light not present in walk-in freezer; wall under dishwasher drain board and floor under dishwasher not clean; dust present on ceiling tiles in kitchen; mold spot on ceiling tile in pantry room.
