Funds available for food, shelter programs

Congress has appropriated funds for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to extend its Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) for Phase 32.

A local board, comprised of representatives from local governmental bodies, nonprofit, social service agencies and religious organizations, is charged with overseeing the Phase 32 award distribution and uses for District 1.

The local board has announced the total District 1 funding available by county is: Audrain, $5,672; Callaway, $7,390; Cole, $9,603; Moniteau, $2,773; and Osage, $1,963.

The funds are designated for either food purchases or improvement to shelter programs, said Ann Bax, president of the United Way of Central Missouri. Last year, the funding went to the Salvation Army to improve its shelter and purchase food and to the Senior Nutrition Council and Rape and Abuse Crisis Services for food purchases, Bax said.

Under the terms of the grant, local organizations eligible to receive these funds should be private, voluntary nonprofits or units of government; have an accounting system; practice non-discrimination; have demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency utility, food and/or shelter programs; and have a voluntary board if they are a private, voluntary organization.

Public or private voluntary organizations in Audrain, Callaway, Cole, Moniteau and Osage counties interested in applying for the Phase 32 Emergency Food and Shelter Program funding should contact the United Way of Central Missouri at 205 Alameda Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65109 for an application or phone 573-636-4100.

The deadline for submission is May 1.
