Dear Editor:
There has been much discussion about the tax code recently. The main reason that the tax code has become so complicated is that it has been used as a way to encourage activity that the legislature thinks is important. Therefore, tax breaks for married people, for individuals who are raising children, for people who are buying a house, for business that are buying new equipment and on and on for thousands of other reasons.
The tax code should serve one purpose only, to raise the money the government needs to function. It should not be used to advance social policies, regardless of how worthwhile those policies might seem. In short, eliminate most deductions and tax breaks and we will have a simpler tax code.
