Suspect in 2 fatal shootings is dead

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A Milwaukee man has taken his own life after inadvertently killing his teenage nephew in a revenge shooting designed to slay a motorist for a traffic accident that killed a younger nephew.

Ricky Chiles III shot himself Thursday morning as police and U.S. marshals closed in on him at a motel in the Chicago area where he was staying with his girlfriend, authorities said.

Milwaukee police had obtained a warrant Wednesday night for Chiles' arrest in connection with the deaths of Archie Brown Jr. and Rasheed Chiles in Milwaukee on Sunday evening.

The string of tragedies unfolded as Brown drove his van on the northwest side of the city around 5 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses say 2-year-old Damani Terry dashed out into the road in front of Brown, apparently hoping to join a group of girls dancing in a park on the other side of the road. Brown hit Damani and, distraught, jumped from his vehicle to attend to the toddler.

Damani's 15-year-old brother Rasheed, who had been celebrating a birthday in a nearby house, also ran to the scene after witnessing the accident.

At this point, police believe, Ricky Chiles, 27, decided to exact revenge and took the law into his own hands. He fired his gun, aiming to shoot the 40-year-old Brown. He hit his target and his teenage nephew was caught in the crossfire.

Brown died at the scene, alongside Damani. Rasheed Chiles died at a hospital.

"This sad example is what we get when we have folks who decide it's their responsibility to use their guns to redress their grievances," Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said.

Authorities had been actively searching for Chiles as a suspect in the shooting, but didn't catch up with him until Thursday. The U.S. Marshals Service said Chiles killed himself with a single shot around 9 a.m.

fand that no officers were injured in the operation.
