Jefferson City man on probation for stealing packages

A Jefferson City man was placed on five years supervised probation for pleading guilty to charges in connection with package theft cases in Cole and Callaway counties.

John Jaegers, 43, was charged with one count of felony theft and two misdemeanor theft charges.

A fourth misdemeanor theft charge was dismissed.

As part of his sentence, Jaegers must also pay more than $1,700 in restitution and serve a 60-day shock detention sentence.

Officers from the Holts Summit Police Department contacted the Callaway County Sheriff's Department and the Jefferson City Police Department about these cases. Once in custody, Jaegers confessed to multiple thefts in the Jefferson City, Holts Summit and Callaway County areas in November 2014.

Authorities were led to Jaegers after one of his victims posted a video to Facebook after discovering a package that had been delivered to her residence was missing.

While reviewing the video from her security system, the victim saw a vehicle driven by Jaegers pull into the driveway of her residence in Lake MyKee at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Nov. 18.

The video shows Jaegers exit his vehicle, walk up to the porch, pick up the package and place the package in his vehicle. Jaegers then get back into his vehicle and drive away.

The victim posted the video to Facebook, stating her children's Christmas gifts were in the package and asking for the public's help in finding the suspect.

Within hours of the video being posted, it had been shared on Facebook hundreds of times.

Family members of Jaegers recognized him from the video and contacted the Holts Summit Police Department with information about where he could be found.
