Basketball Tigers add point guard

From Oak Hill Academy

COLUMBIA - Terrence Phillips knows a little something about winning basketball games.

He will be bringing that experience to the Missouri men's basketball team after signing a letter of intent Wednesday to play for the Tigers.

Phillips comes to Missouri from Oak Hill Academy (Va.), where the 5-foot-11 point guard helped the team to an 88-4 record as a starter the last two seasons.

"We are excited to have Terrence in our Mizzou program," Missouri head coach Kim Anderson said. "He's an outstanding young man with the sort of character and drive that will fit in well with our program. He's a true point guard who has proven to be a winner during his career so far. He and his teams have won and done so at an extremely high level."

Oak Hill's all-time career assists leader, Phillips dished a program single-season record 417 assists as a senior. The Warriors finished with a 47-1 record and spent 10 weeks as the nation's No. 1-ranked boys basketball team.

Phillips also averaged 7.7 points and 4.2 steals per game and earned MVP honors during Oak Hill's appearances at the Iolani Prep Classic and Spalding Hoophall Classic.

"I'm excited to get Mizzou get back to its winning ways," Phillips said. "I'm more ready than ever to help Coach Anderson turn it around and restore the roar in Mizzou Arena."

A native of Orange County, Calif., Phillips played for three years at Oak Hill. He orally committed to Missouri in early January after receiving offers from Auburn, Western Kentucky and East Tennessee State. Phillips is the brother of guard Brandon Phillips of the Detroit Pistons.

Phillips is the third member of the recruiting class, joining 6-7 forward Kevin Puryear (Blue Springs South High School) and 6-4 guard Cullen VanLeer (Pacific High School). Puryear and VanLeer signed in November.
