Missouri baseball tops Tennessee in SEC action

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tanner Houck earned the win Friday for Missouri and Peter Fairbanks shut down the Tennessee bats on Saturday as the Tigers won their second straight Southeastern Conference series.

The Tigers (24-12, 10-5 SEC) defeated the Volunteers 8-3 Friday night and followed that up with a 10-1 win Saturday afternoon to win their fourth conference series of the season.

Houck (6-1) allowed three earned runs on six hits in five innings and Fairbanks (4-3) tossed seven innings, striking out 11 - a career-high - and allowed one earned run.

On Friday, Missouri used a six-run fifth inning to take the 6-2 lead. Jack Klages doulbed to right-center field to score Jake Ivory, Zach Lavy and Trey Harris, and Jake Ring's home run to right-center plated three more.

The Tigers added one run in the sixth inning and one run in the ninth to run away with the lead.

Lavy was 2-for-3 from the plate with walk and Klages was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The Missouri bullpen didn't give up a run, pitching four innings, while allowing two hits.

Missouri used another big fifth inning, this time scoring four runs. Lavy started the inning off with a triple to right, then scored when Ivory grounded out to the shortstop. Case Munson and Klages homered back-to-back and Brett Peel scored after he tripled pushed the Tiger lead to 5-1.

Another four-run inning put the game out of reach for Tennessee, as the Tigers extended their lead to 10-1 in the eight. A Ring single to center scored two and Ryan Howard singled the next at-bat to score another.

Ring was 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Tigers on offense, and Lavy and Ivory were both 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Missouri host Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday before hosting a three-game series with Alabama. The Tigers are currently one-game behind Vanderbilt in the SEC East.
